ESTRADIOL (E2)

Estradiol is the predominant estrogen circulating in the female body made in the ovaries from the conversion of testosterone.  In females appropriate Estradiol levels are required to maintain bone density, mood and cognitive abilities, metabolic activity and sexual activity.  Decreased estrogens can lead to periods of depression, loss of bone density, loss of mental clarity, increased body fat and sexual dysfunction.   This test is usually performed on samples taken on the 21st day of a normal 28 day menstrual cycle and adjusted slightly for shorter and longer cycles.
